I think I may have to figure some of this out myself, but thought I would ask for some Info.I am going to use a 250 6 cylinder in my 46.As of now I plan on using the stock transmission.I have a bellhousing somewhere that should work. What flywheel and pressure plate will I need. Will the one on the 216 work?I think the 250 uses the same flywheel as the small block chevys. Is that correct?I guess I will fab up my own engine mounts unless there is a easy to do kit that I can buy?Any other info that would help?

Keep in mind that if your truck was titled using the engine number as the "VIN" on the title be sure to retitle it after the swap. Otherwise the "VIN" on your title will be no where on your truck.

Not sure about the pressure plate and flywheel (I'm paying attention because I'm swapping my 235 for a running 230). There is a great step by step on engine mounts (I'll have to find the link when I get home from work)... or you could fab your own. The 230 I got had a mount fabbed up for it to maintain the front mounter mount from the 235... which I can get pictures of for you if you want

You cannot use the '46 bell housing on a 250. Different bolt pattern to the block. I believe that you also have the "flat" as opposed to "angled" rear engine mounts on the bell housing crossmember. If you're not sure what I mean, look it'll be obvious. That can be addressed by swapping the rear engine crossmember for one from mid '55 through '72. I have NOT done this so I don't know what it involves. V-8 Bellhousings from mid '55 through '72 will bolt to the crossmember as well as the engine, and '73 to I think '87 bellhousings will bolt to the engine but need a crossmember under the tranny, although I don't know how you will handle the enclosed driveline. Your best bet is probably a '73 or later bellhousing with a stepdown ring for the tranny and purchased engine mounts and some kind of crossmember mounted under the the rear of the tranny. Any bellhousing after '67, I think, will need a "stepdown' adapter ring to align your transmission. The same clutch should work if the flywheel is drilled for it and be no problem. I've probably missed something, so I hope someone else will chime in to add information.

best wishes,

Les

You will need to fabricate a mount for the clutch and brake pedal.

Thanks for the link.I had a early bellhousing that had the rear mounts on it that would fit the 250 engine.I found the mounts but not the bell housing.I don't remember getting rid of it,but maybe I did.I thought I had saved it for something like this. The rear mounts were a little different but would be easy to make work. Now if I could just find it.

@metal shaper; ANY sbc bell housing from '55/2 - '86 will fit the 250. Any sbc '55/2 - '72 bell should bolt to the 250 AND to your rear mount crossmember IF (big if) you have the sloping mount saddles instead of the flat ones. 1969 - 1972 have the large line up cutout or hole for the front bearing carrier on the tranny.
