I've been looking at a lot of different options for the drivetrain for my 1950 Panel truck. I've had a few of the locals suggest i look at the 700r4 trans as an option.
What years were the best for the 700r4? Are there any weak parts that should be upgraded?

it is a good trans for normal driving, the engine you plan will determine if it's appropriate .... there's a good run-down on the 700 here, just avoid the oldest ones .... and be prepared to do the proper TV cable setup

... I didn't read Bill's link but I as I understand it from the guy who is building my 700R4 for me says be sure to stay above 88...... I'm fairly sure it was 88 could have been stay above 87. Maybe I need to go back and read Bills link!!

I put on in my 37 a few years ago and it is so nice compared to the 350 I had ran for the first few years. I'm now changing the 350 in my panel to a 700.
I've also "tortured" the 700 in my 37 and so far no problems.
Just info.......

Pretty much any of the 700R4 are good transmissions. When I was rebuilding one for an 85 K10, I was told to stay away from the 87 and newer with the auxillary valve body. I guess things change over time.

What you want to look for is one setup for a V8 applications. Stay far far away from the V6 setup.

Make sure you have one with a 10 or 13 vane front pump. Most 85 and later will have the 10 vane pump.

A TV boost valve is something I would definately add. One of their weakness' is not feeding enough fluid to transmission.

A high outout throttle valve is also a good upgrade. The 700R4 was known for going in and out of overdrive. It'll hold itself until you put your foot into with this kit.

The last thing would be a shift kit. I like the TransGo kit. It recalibrates things to work more effectively.

All these parts should give you a good, solid trouble free transmission.
