I read that if I can find a V8 bellhousing from 1955 through 59 that I could swap in a V8 for my tired 235.
I've got a 55 series II with a four speed. It's all original but I'm afraid the 235 is getting tired because it's noisy above 2500 rpm and I think it's the rod bearings.
I have found a bellhousing out of a 55 series II that had a 265 in it. The price is reasonable and I have a rebuilt (1979) 350 from another project.
Will this bellhousing work with the 350 or am I limited to finding a 265?
Does it make more sense to go with an automatic?
I don't want a hot rod. I just want reliability.
Many Thanks

Yes it will work as the bolt pattern should be the same. Check it out first to be sure. As for using your 4 speed or an AT the choice is yours. If you go with the AT then you'll need a cooler or a radiator made for the auto.

If you go Auto Trans you will need to change the motor mount set-up.

The factory stock V8 used the same type mounts as the 6-cylinders (2 at the front and 2 at the bellhousing). Installing a newer auto trans you need to go to the 3-point mount system (2 at the engine side and 1 at the trans tailshaft).

If you stay with the factory 4-speed all you need is the Truck V8 bellhousing and the 55-59 V8 motor mount kit sold by all of the vendors. This kit has 2 new brackets that bolt to the front crossmember moving the mount points back a few inches due to the V8 being shorter than the 6-cylinder. This is a easy conversion.

Hope this helps,

Mike B smile
