I have a 1949 Chevy 3600 barn find and in need of outer tie rod ends- tapered with the sleeves. The normal sources we all know here have not worked out yet. If anyone has good used or NOS please advise. Many thanks

You may want to consider an internal rebuild parts kit.
These are available at many after market auto parts stores.
The Filling Station & Chevy of the 40's are just two specialty reproduction
parts suppliers that have these internal kits.
Just google them & they will come right up.

You may also want to replace the the tie rod end ball studs.

Your 1949 3600 uses the same tie rod end parts as my 1954 3600.

Ball studs, at least a good check is important. Over time the tie-rod housing tends to cut them right under the ball. My 50' 3600 was about 1/2 way through on a couple, many of these trucks have led a hard life.

Has anyone ever found a solution to putting on the modern style tie rod ends?

Mark, I just tackled that issue on my 52 3100. This will be a 2 man operation at least or ease. You need a torch, hammer and punch. Remove the spindle and place in a vice where the ball is facing down. Heat the spindle up with the torch until it glows super red. Guy #2 hammers the punch until you knock out the old ball stud. ***BE CAREFULL not to slip your hand down on the hot spindle*** If you have a couple of pair cloth and leather gloves just in case. We had to heat mine up a couple of times but they came out with ease. No, I didn't burn myself, but it was close a couple of times. The new tie rods drop right in the hole.

Just to clarify my previous post, place the spindle on the vice with the ball down between, the spindle on top. Ball needs to be very loose and not actually viced down. You can you some other kind of substitute as long as the ball can drop freely but take the abuse of the punch and hammer.

Mark, am I missing something here? When I upgraded my tie rod ends I simply took the two nuts off the steering arm, and put the steering arm in a vice, ground off the back side and punched the old ballstuds out. Then I screwed the new tie rod ends onto the tie rod and the new tie rod ends just drop down into the steering arm hole.
I think someone actually has a tech tip on this if you check.

After taking the old ones out I put the steering arms back on and after screwing the new tie rod ends onto the tie rod they just dropped right down in the steering arm. The tie rod ends I got from Classic Parts drop in without any reaming...... although I do believe, or read somewhere, that there is a degree or two taper but no need to ream.

If I missed whats going on, are off on another trail just ignore me please. Its been a looong day. (started with bath tub repair!!

Mark I just finished converting my 59/36 to the modern tierod s cost about $200 2 tie rodends and a new tie rod. poping the old ball studs out takes about 5 min per side. I used 68-72 k5 tie rod ends pm me if you want pn.

Look at the replacement TIE ROD ENDS
in the LMC catalog.
To me it looks like this is what you need.
$24.95 each ....plus nut & cotter pin.
And of course the labor.
