i have a 1112353 distributor that i took off my old 216.
will it work on my 54 235?
my interchange manual says it should be a 1112388 dist and it doesn't even list a 1112353. it's an ac delco.

Yes it will work, however the drive gear I believe may fail with the later type cam. At least check this out. I wouldn't use it as points may be more difficult to find than later type dist.

The issue is the camshafts... cast iron or steel. The steel will be much harder and will chew up cast iron gears.

HERE IS A LINK TO ID THE CAM AND DIZZY

A rebuilt dist from Advance (Pn 30-1609) is $56+$10core. Includes a set of points and condenser... all you need is the vacuum advance or dist clamp.

They do not come with a grease cup or data plate... other than that for $60 (less if you get the coupons) I would just buy a new one and not worry about gears or worn parts.

I purchased one from there for my 54 235. It came with vac advanced and the grease cup
...pic...

If your new one comes with an o ring as in that pic, remove it.

Check the bushings/shaft for play. I don't know if there are any rebuild kits out there... but springs do wear out and the weight holes can become worn if not lubed... all minor issues.... but that's what causes poor performance.. your timing not being in, well, time.
