Anyone know how many vent tubes are on a '51 3100 torque tube rear end? ...I vaguely remember seeing two but I've never paid much attention.

I believe there should only be one, on the driver side?

How do I get the old vent tube out? The new one looks like it just presses in.

No threads on the rear end of my '54 for the vent which means it was pressed (tapped) in at the factory. Have you tried to gently remove it?

Cool. I'll soak it a bit and try to gently work it loose.

Should I put any type of sealant on the new one when I press it in?

Now don't go jumpin' the gun Eric, unless I'm mistaken that
should be screwed in. I believe it's a 1/8" NPT. And yes, it
would be a good idea to use a little dab of sealer like
Permatex or the like on it.

Denny, I figured I'd free it by twisting left anyhow but the new one from Classic Parts looks like a press fit deal.

Here's a pic of the one they list for '47-'91 under both Car Parts and Truck Parts - http://www.classicparts.com/images/93-245.jpg

I guess I am wondering why one would want to replace this part?
They don't go bad.

They can clog tho, and mine is. So for $3 I figured I'd have a back-up in case this one breaks when I attempt to remove and clean it.

From the horses mouth:
37-51 ALL
52-54 3/4, 1 TON, UTIL......VENTILATOR, rear axle (thread type)....3684539 .18c
52 PASS., 1/2 TON
53-54 ALL (except PASS., 1/2 TON)......VENTILATOR, rear axle (drive type)....3700490 .18c

So I guess your '51, 3104 should be a thread type, if it's stock that is.

Interesting. I wonder why they don't offer a threaded version...perhaps the threaded hole cuts the plastic vent enough to hold it.

I'll let you guys know what happens.

well, at least for those where one isn't present anymore (but the hole is there), it would definitely help keep road debris out.

Denny, you were correct, the breather was threaded. Came out easy and the metal cleaned up real nice with some kerosene. The top felt loose but the shaft was completely clogged.

For what it's worth, the plastic replacement doesn't come close to fitting. I suppose in a pinch you could drill out the original hole and press it in.

The top is supposed to fit loose, that's normal.

lol. I should have been more clear...I meant to say that it seemed fine and normal but was completely nonfunctional due to the clogged shaft.

I'm hoping this is why my dif seals are always wet when I get off the hwy. I'm gonna clean it all up this week and see if it still weeps. Worst case I've got a new cover gasket and plenty of GL. I'll have to get to the axle ends later on.
