Where these an option instead of standard? I don't like the looks and would rather get rid of them and use hand signals instead

Signals were an option. You can hide your signals by purchasing a dual bulb recepticle for the rear tail lights and also change out the single filament front parking light for a dual. All is hidden. Another option is to go with a very small LED hidden in the grill. Also, if you buy a new harness, the turn signal wires are included (Jim Carter's and others) and built into the harness so you don't see em.

I was running the dual bulbs in the tail lights and front parking lights prior to dismantle and they worked pretty good.

Ed, IIRC, turn signals weren't options until the fifites.

Someone installed these ugly trailer lights on mine and I hate them.

I rewired my parking lights on the front to do 1154/1157 bulbs (the former is 6V the latter is 12V), and they work like a champ.

Since the rear end is not stock -- and will end up becoming a nice flatbed trailer someday -- I just went down to the trailer supply store and got four of those surface mount lights that take 1157's, put them on the bed, and threw some 1154's in there, and I have 4 running lights, 2 blinkers and 2 brake lights. I have everything wired to one of those water-tight plasic terminal boxes under the bed for simplicity's sake.

Now if I could only get those ugly trailer lights off the front!

Directionals weren't factory installed until the mid '50s, but they were a dealer installed item, not necessarilly a GM made product. I've seen both Guide and Signal-Stat directionals on older GMs. My guides show '54 as being the first year for factory directional signals as an option.

I wired in 2 toggle switches and 2 diodes for the turn signals in my '41. I used short handle toggles and mounted them under the lower lip of the dash and they're invisible to most people

You could also get a toggle that has 3 positions so you would have left, right, and center is off.

I installed the kit mentioned. It used the 3 position toggle switch. I mounted my toggle to the left of the column under the dash. I did not want the add-on turn signal switch hanging off my column. If you do a lot of city driving like I do, you may find that the toggle under the dash is not real fun. I found myself leaning forward all the time to activate it and then shut it back off. I am in the process of installing a column mounted turn signal...even though I don't want too!

46 IP, thats a good point, it may be better just to deal with ugly than to deal with uncomfertable.

I wish I had seen that one before I bought the one I did. The column clamp looks pretty cool.

Mine is close, but uses a hose clamp to mount it to the column.
