There are some pic's in the gallery of a Federal aircraft tug (cab only) from 9/01/2008. The owner-Dennis Johnson of Beresford, S.D. says he would like to find a good home for it. These things are quite rare and I could really use it to restore my 1957 federal tug. If anyone could put me in contact with Dennis, I would almost be in stovebolt heaven, and greatly appreciate it.

Thank you

Can you provide the link? I might be able to track him down from that.

Hi Paul

Thank you for your help and quick response. I'm not sure how to cut and paste the link, but it is easy to find the pic's. If you click the "SEARCH" forum at the top of this page, and then in the google search box type "federal aircraft tug". Click search, and the fifth link down from the top on the left side is titled "STOVEBOLT GALLERY---Another great antique Chevy/GMC Truck..." Clicking this will pull up the link and the Pic's. If there is anything more I can do to help you, please let me know. Have a great day!

Mark

Go to this page http://www.stovebolt.com/gallery/johnson_dennis_1954_02.html and click on the link on the name Dennis. That will launch your email client so you can send him email. His email address is djohnson @ bmtc.net

I've been looking at it, trying to figure out how to make it a crew cab. So far, no ideas.

I thought about it too. Trouble is the back is as narrow as the front.
I think to make a decent looking crew cab out of it you'd remove windshield and firewall with windows, add a real cab back with window. To do so you'd have to move the rear set of doors out at the back, making them more parallel to each other by widening part of the roof. Then you're left with vent windows on the back side of those doors which look funny, so you remove them and square up the window frames...

At which point you may as well have started off with 2 stock cabs and not the federal truck cab in the first place.

I guess you'd have to start off with a good cab, cut it behind the windshield, then split the federal cab and weld the back-half to it. Then you're still left with the front section of a cab.

I'd rather walk and carry a Chevy hub cap than ride in a Ferd.

Good point. Put fenders, grill, and hood on both sides. I'll donate a hood to anyone that wants to do it.

There was(is) one around here, pretty heavy, stock, used to tow around B-36 aircraft. Seems like one could get an AD suburban that was wrecked in the front or rear, cut a piece of the body behind the cab out the length one wants, weld it in after cutting this one in the exact middle!

I was reading this thread and know a guy who is selling one. But it has been altered/converted to a boom/winch yard truck. Really cool tho.
