I just counted the teeth on 3 starters I have, knowing they came off my 216's that were in my 51 & 53. I come up with 9 teeth. The only difference I can recall is regarding 6 volt vs 12 volt changes to the flywheel. 139 teeth vs 168. The size of the starter drive shaft and gear changed also. The Master Parts book seem to show that the same number of teeth were used on 6v trucks back to the 30s.

I know the difference between the 6v and 12v flywheel tooth counts, but what's the difference in the tooth count between the starters?
Truck is a '54, 235 with a solonoid starter. It's got a 139 tooth flywheel and the owner wants to go back to the foot start. I've found a starter with 9 teeth and just want to make sure it's compatible with the 139 toot flywheel. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2008 Posts: 899 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2008 Posts: 899 | Not a 100% sure, but I think the 12 volt starter drive has 9 teeth with the OD. of the teeth = 1 inch. 6 volt starter drive has 9 teeth also, but with an OD. of the teeth = 1 1/8 inch.

If the gear diameter is different, I suppose I can just engage the bendix without the battery hooked up and see if the teeth mesh with the flywheel.
