I have been looking for front lower gas shock mounts to put on my '48 1 ton. I have not had any luck wih Jim Carter or the othersupplies, and no hits in a parts wanted ad.

Is there someple else that you know carries them?

Has anyone every tried to splice the 1/2 ton gas spring mount with the 1 ton lever action mount?

I have a 41 1 Ton with lever action shocks. Why bother? The springs are so stiff what good would it do.

If I really needed a change I would splice in a new IFS set up and go with power steering as well.

The cost for me to get my lever action shocks going is equivalent to putting in gas springs, and it is something I can pull off in a weekend. Springs have lost a little bit of their stiffness over the years and they could benefit from a little damping.

Front lower, the ones that bolt under the front spring U-bolts?

Maybe a machine shop/welding shop could fab something for you. Make a template out of poster board and take it in.

Since I had bought the 1/2 ton mounts before I realized they would not fit... I went for the method that involved splicing the two mounts together.

It was a fairly simple process;

- I took a whiz wheel and cut off the far mounting hole on the purchased mount

- Put the original bracket on the u-bolt then put the not cut bracket on top of it, then I marked the location to cut on the original bracket

- Cut original bracket and grind so both cut faces contact cleanly/ grind "V" to help in welding

- Clamp to a flat surface and weld

- Grind away some material for clearance on the axle. (There is a raised portion that I don't think is on a 1/2 ton)
