The one that LMC sells apparently doesn't need one, but I thought maybe it has been modified to work without a transmitter like some companies do to the older Sun tachs.

What wiring options do you have? (i.e. are the terminals labeled?)
I've got an aftermarket tach in mine and it only has the three wires - Hot, Ground, and Distributor.
If the unit is deeper than an inch, you probably don't need a brain box. If it's a shallow thing, then you probably do.

I'd like to install one with either the original type or modify the cluster to fit in an old sun tach. I have found so far that the FZ-88N (similar in design to the factory tach) doesn't need the transmitter, but I would have to figure out how to modify the cluster to allow the tach to look factory.
