When removing the 3 bolts on each side there was what looked like pipe dope in the threads. I am assuming at some point in this trucks life this was added to hold them in place as I don't see any reference to it in the shop manual. Has anyone else found this as well? If I need to add some it will be much easier to do it now before its back on the truck. I have found that material on hood bolts on my trucks. I like Bill's suggestion that this was a leak-stop sealer. Maybe this is shown in the Factory Assembly Manual?

In my OPINION it is there as a sealer. I've seen this same black putty many times where there were body holes with bolts and potentially could let water in. When I put my hood hinges back on I rolled me up a strip of the 3M black weather stripping stuff, into a ball, and put it back in.

water from leaking into the interior of the cab. Common to all
of the AD's. Just get some from you local body shop supply or
FLAPS and apply it generously around the bolt holes before you
bolt the hinges back on the cowl.
