my bed is original to 1953 chevy 3100. But it showed no sign of the side angle being welded.

Smooth as a evening lake.

Did some of these beds not have angle strips on the side?

For a '53 I don't think so. Every one I've seen in the last 40 years had the side bed angles.

If they have been removed you would probably see grind marks or rust pits where they originally were. Has the bed been rebuilt and repainted? Maybe someone cut them off and smoothed things out.

yes possibly - it was primed when I got it- no wood bed - I took it back down to bare metal - but saw no sign of weld/grind marks

I am glad I did not weld them on for 3/4 inch boards- as the supplier I got the oak from sent 1/2 thick boards. I do not plan on using the bed as a work truck so I guess I will use these "Dress up" thin boards
