what would it be? he says no GMC on valve cover.

It's the only G.m.C. engine of that era,(to MY knowledge),that has the intake/exhaust on the passenger-side of the engine. According to my GMC Heavy Duty Truck Catalog, a 650 series should have a 318 in it. Check out the flat ledge, at the base of the distributor, for the engine serial no.
