Does anyone have any extra rod shims they would be willing to part with? Can't seem to find a source for new ones

Can't help wit a source, but here's some part numbers to look for:

Federal-Mogul shim set: FSM 104S
TRW: SM 104S

Main bearing shims:

F-M: FSM 105S
TRW: SM 105S

Chevs of the 40's sight states that their shims are .009. The broken shims off my rods measure .002

What about this set - 364322?

364322 is also sold by Tim Tygart - give him a call about the thickness?

I just orded rod shims from the Filling Station. I have my fingers crossed. Last time I needed some I used .001 and .002 brass shim stock from Carquest.

However, let us know what you get. Some of the vendors state that their set of shims replace 364322 but they are the .009 set sold be Chevs of the 40s?

Just got the shims I ordered from the guy that tclederman posted a link for. The company is Marx Parts, out of Wisconsin. Same ole' B.S. Claims shims are for '29 to'54 Chevy's, and they show up .009 thick. You would think these companies would do a little research before they sell you something. 49 to 54 service manual clearly states that the 235 comes with two .002 thick shims on each side of the rod. What a bunch of clowns. Time to start drinkin' and then cuttin' up the beer cans afterwards

That might be what all the vendors are now selling for that original part number.

or maybe buyers should do a bit of research before buying? you might have asked what the measurement was for the part, or what options were available for a part that's been obsolete for decades

Got news for you red58, got the shims in my hand and there is no peel what ya want. Furthermore, he won't answer e-mails or return phone calls

I bought shims like that a few years ago from one of the major vendors. I think they were .006" thick one piece brass shims. They were absolutely useless. the shocking part was that they were made by Federal Modul.

I was fooled by Federal Mogul main shims once.
I would have sworn they were one thick shim, but when I cut into the edge of the shims with my knife it turned out they were just very well stuck together.
I have a feeling this is the case here.

Bolter2, listen to Dave, the description of what was sold should be what you have in your hand, if not then try the same thing from another supplier .... and another ... for the same thing

Well I got my rod shims today and they were just like the ones I bought a few years ago. There are twelve of them and although I haven't measured them yet I am pretty sure they are at least .006". They are not thinner shims stuck together.

I got the shims in the mail from you today.
As I suspected they are 3 .002" shims very stuck together in each of the two you sent.
I do not understand why they do not inclose instructions with the shims telling you that they are made this way. It would be even better if they came not stuck together.
They are so stuck together it is almost imposable to get apart. Here is a link to one of your shims starting to peel apart.

Be VERY careful!
It is almost imposable to divide them.
It is a sure way to cut yourself.
It actually takes a very sharp fine knife to split them.

It looks like a job for Exacto Blade to me...

Your right but a Swiss Army Knife can do anything.

Your right on two acconts Dave. The scissors on my swiss army knife worked perfectly for cutting my own rod shims out of shim stock. I finally did get the other shims to peel apart, also using my very sharp knife, however, being .0025 thick, I needed other size shim material to get the clearances I wanted. Your also correct about the fact that there are no instructions sent with these things. It also does not help when the supplier will not answer e-mails or phone calls. The shims I recieved were of the Billy Possum brand, and they will peel apart. After I finally suceeded in geeting them apart I had some fun giving a few to my mechanic and machine shop buddies and asking them to make me a .0025 shim out of what they had in their hand

I switched to one of the little utility jobs where you extend the blade and break off the old chunk. Armed with the new knowledge I just gently scraped the edge and they separated. This has been very helpful for me, thanks.
