I have a ford 8.8 in my 51 Chevy 3100, I want to adapt the rear end that has the round flange to the u joint set up. I believe it's called the companion flange. From what I have read they come in 2 sizes (universal joints), i don't have my drive shaft made yet but does the size matter ? I have an ls-1 with the 460 e transmission.

Your drive shaft shop should be able to make it up for you at either end.....

Maybe just take in some good digital pics and take them in to get a quote.

Carolina Driveline in Spartanburg,S.C. can do just about anything. Tom has been doing this for 30 years. I work part time for him a few days a week and I see him do a lot of stuff.
Yes, your drive shaft shop should be able to build what you want. IF not, look up Carolina Driveline and send them info. Drive shafts are received and shipped everyday.

I'd rather walk and carry a Chevy hub cap than ride in a Ferd.
I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you smile

Which 8.8 are you using? If Explorer, did you center the pinion or are you goint to run it with the 3" offset?

You can also convert the pinion flange to U-joint with NAPA P/N PUJ-372 or Spicer 2-2-1369.

Are you running 5x4.5 Ford wheels?

While I am asking...what harness and PCM for the LS motor?

Yes it is the explorer rear end but i had the pinion centered. Yes at this point i have the ford 5x 4.5 rims, but I have some high dollar billet spacers for another bolt pattern in my storage.
The Harness and PCM are my next project along with trans. linkage.Any recommendations on the harness / PCM I have the american auto wire kit for the rest of the truck.

Back to your original question, you can measure the distance between bolt-holes on the flange to figure out the size (small or large, I think the large is 3" between bolt holes). I think with the conversion part numbers I posted you can choose the size of your U-joint (1330 or 1350). Most of the driveshaft folks have a little measurement sheet with directions and you send that in to them, it would include the type of connections and they would make the driveshaft from that. Bunch of Explorer 8.8 info at Ford Ranger forum:

http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/Explorer8_8.html

Did the shop center the pinion by cutting the long axle tube 3" and using a stock short axle on both sides? That seems to be the easiest/cheapest way and no custom axle costs. Since I am putting Fatman's on the front I am going to run Ford pattern wheels and I can use stock over-the-counter parts as much as possible.

For harness I am planning to use stock harness with stock fuse underhood box. See http://www.lt1swap.com/underhoodfuseblock.htm I have the fuse box --Ebay for $30, came with all relays and fuses which in themselves were probably worth more than that. I am planning to hook up power and ground to that box (using stock battery cables from stock harness), then run fuel pump relay, tach signal, ignition, etc. as show in the link. Trying to keep everything as stock as possible to get running, then modify things as needed. I think I will have to figure out how to wire in a OBDII port and an engine check light, but other than that, I should be able to take to local Chevy dealer and tell them to act like it is a 2003 Silverado.

PowerTV folks have been sending harnesses to 150tunes in Spokane Valley, WA. and they are about cheap enough that I may go that route.
