I just finished reading the thread about the heater switch, and how it works. I understand all that. My question is where does the darn resistor mount in a '62, non-deluxe heater? When I bought my truck, there was no resistor. Just a jumper across the terminals that gave me wide open speed. The resistor is not mounted to the back of the switch like it was on A/D trucks. I think that it mounts to the fan housing somewhere, but, I can't tell where. Any help and/or pics will be appreciated.

hey Mark, welcome to the fray!

can't tell ya just where it mounts as I haven't had a 60's model in awhile, but the controls should have a slider type switch like such and the seperate resistor looks like here - I'd bet that there'll be about 4 wires off the switch - 1 to power, 2 to the resistor, 1 to the motor - the resistor would then have 1 to the motor - switch would have off, lo, med, high with the lo and med going thru 1/2 or all of the resistor - no idea where it would mount, but I'd think maybe inside the heater case

usually mounts on the backside of the heater/defrost plenum, can't really see it until you remove plenum, brian

You don't really have to see it to install it. You can install it by feel pretty easily.
If it's like the one I just installed,it has 3 wires to it,and does go on the back of the heater plenum. Reaching back just left of the heater motor, you'll feel a rectangular hole with 2 tabs sticking out. The coil sring side goes into the hole, and the board snaps into the tabs.(tight fit-you may have to pry on the tabs to get the board to snap in.) Then just connect the 3 wire plug and it works.

Speed,

That sounds right, but I think that my board is too wide. The coils fit into that slot with no problem. I'll try it again tomorrow when I have more time. Thanks Bill and 64fleetside for the timely responses.

The board won't go into the hole-just the coils. Then the 2 tabs on the outside of the plenum squeeze the edges of the board to hold everything in place. You'll notice the board has kind of an hourglass shape;the narrow spots are to register the board in the tabs. As I said,it's a very tight fit,so you might have to reach back there and pry one tab outward while you push the board under it.
Not a fun job,but far from the worst one.
