I'm having a hell of time trying to install my new rope crankseal seal for my 1953 235 engine. I've taking the tranny out and loosen the crank bearing caps to give me more room. HOW MUCH CAN THE CRANK DROP WHEN LOOSEN? I got it to drop about 1/8" I've tried to pry it gently to bring it down some more but that all I got. Is that the most I can get? I just can't get the rope seal to insert in the groove of the upper bearing cap it's to tight and not enough clearance betweeen crank and cap.

you need to pull it through with a special tool, should be easy to find at any good auto parts. It's like the old toy Chinese hand cuffs, insert seal into end of tool which grabs the seal so you then pull it around the crank.
Here's another type, search Google for more.

I wasn't able to use the special tool because it took up too much length. I use a piece of picture hanging wire and guided the start of the seal with the blade of a screwdriver. By the way the tool they are talking about is a miniature version of the one used to pull cables.

If you try to lower only the rear of the crankshaft only, it will hang up on the thrust bearing. Otherwise you could lower it a little more. At some point you could be putting a strain on the front seal. Since you have the pan off you could remove the front cover and drop the crank quite a bit. This would allow you to make sure the timing gear is still lined up when you are done.
