It vibrates so bad it will make you dizzy if you look at to long. Tried to tightn it up and it is tighter than it was. It appears that the two screws that hold it to the center strip only tighten down so much until they strip the rubber strip. Not a very sturdy way to mount it. Maybe its rigged, as I purchased it this way and am trying to make it right, on my 1952 Chevy 1/2 ton truck. Thanks HUGH

the screws should be going through the inside center metal strip into the outside center strip which is threaded.
Perhaps you could try one of the "clips" from a vendor that is tightened to the center strip and then attach the mirror to it??

...and on some models there is a hole in the inside center strip that a mirror arm can go through and be tightened up.

I'm sure some more bolters that are more familiar with your problem will chime in with their solutions.

it is quite possible the screws are stripped out, I had one, and just went to the next size screw on that particular hole. The head isn't exactly the same size, but unless you know it, no one would notice.

There is an inside metal strip, center rubber, then a chrome strip outside. How do I remove the outside strip to see the condition of the threads? Do I remove all of the screws in the verticle position and then just remove it from the outside? thanks HUGH

I just removed the small bolts should be 4, but in my case 1 is missing. The bolts seem to be in good condition. Are all the bolts suppose to be the same length. Also are replacement bolts available? I can put the assembly back together, but to do it correctly, it leaves no way to mount a mirror, I'm begining to think my mirror is not original, will post pic of it when my daughter wakes up.

I pick up some oval head screws at my local true value hardware store. They even had stainless.

Mine are 10/32 but you can take your old one to compare.

They should be the same length




When was the last time you check the fluid level in your tranny?

Here with a pic of my mirror as it sits right now. I have looked at some pics online and like your pic they just thread in. What do they thread into? I only have four holes in that assembly and none of them fit a threaded stud the size of the one on the mirror.

That little bracket for 5.00 seems such a non-sturdy way to mount that mirror as its only shored up by 1 small bolt. Was looking at a jam nut behind the strip, atleast that strip uses 4 bolts instead of one. Mine mirror vibrates so bad right now. Was looking at that Y mount for a 1954 or the later one, that may be a possibility also, thanks much for the pics and links, I have a better understanding of what the assembly is suppose to look like, thanks HUGH

I used a jam nut, now there is a bulge behind the removable metal strip. Maybe I need an ultra ultra thin jam nut. The jam nut I purchased was half the thickness off a regular nut, still to thick.

Does anyone have a pic of that little two hole bracket installed?

Thanks for that close up of the small bracket. I think I'm going with the inside mount with 5/16 - 24 jam nut, but it will have to be micro thin as to not bulge the inside the cab removable 4 hole strip, any sugestions or pics of the jam nut mount?

So, why can't the jamb nut be put on top of the trim?

Ah, got it. Might be possible to run a 1/8" strip of steel the length of the center strip, inside the center strip. Sandwich in there and drill and tap a hole for the mirror arm. OR you could put that lengthwise piece over the inner trim and do the same. Sandwich it outside.

I don't think you will ever get a mirror with that long of an arm moounted in rubber (the front windshield) not to vibrate. At best you will cure it for short periods of time until it lossens up again.

The choices are attach to the top of the cab (like the '54) or go to a much shorter arm between mirror head and mount. You get too much mechanical advantage at the end of the arm. It's best just to put it back to stock.
