Just curious what most people prefer in their stepside trucks when it comes to having the spare tire rear fender or an ordinary fender without the notch for the spare. I am looking to paint my 56 chevy stepside shortbox and currently have the spare tire fender. What doe you guys think?

It doesn't really matter what others prefer. It's your truck. What do YOU prefer?

I like them. And new fenders are available for TF trucks. I suppose they will not sell many because there is no source for the mount that holds the tire to the bed.

Kicking self for selling off my Taskforce trucks.
Still looking for an LCF or conventional big bolt in decent shape.

I prefer them under the truck, looks cleaner to me. But I also agree with Rich, go with what you like.

Like the side mount, much easier to get to if you need it and
the tire isn't covered in grease and mud.
I would think they would sell a lot of the dimpled fenders,
they've always been in demand and fabricating a bracket isn't
all that much trouble.
I wish someone would pull their head out and take a look at the
market. They need to make an AD fender with a dimple, I see 10
AD's for every TF, they're just that much more popular right
now.

Agree completely here^^^!!!

I would only add that the stock '54 or '55 was 'in harm's way' on the traffic side, I would like to see it offered on the pass. side.

Reason I asked, is I could go either way, I like both. Maybe I need two trucks? LOL Thanks for all the replys. I am going to stick with the notched fender since that is what I have already.

I have the opposite opinion of most posters. I had a 1959 with the side mounted spare as my only 4 wheel vehicle for several years (long ago). I never got a flat with it and the spare was always in the way when loading or unloading from that side of the truck. I finally got a smooth fender and mounted the spare under the truck. I was sorry I hadn't done it years earlier. If you don't carry much in the bed, especially up front it probably is not an issue.

Guess the 1/2 ton is worse than the 3/4 ton, I've had mine since
2005 and driven it most of the time and never even noticed that
it was there cept when I washed it.

Yes! ....what he said...they seem to not be currently produced and vintage ones are hard to find in decent shape

It's on the driver side so it doesn't block your reward vision. Same reason you're supposed to hang the dry-cleaning behind the driver's seat. ...try backing out of a spot with it on the other side. :P

I like the side spare mount because it's something you don't see on modern trucks. I picked up a stainless steel spare cover from a van for $5 at a yard sale and it added a little shine to my basic truck. http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn214/jfnar/1964%20chevy%20truck/61e515e5.jpg. The only thing I don't like is it obstructs the view in the driver's side mirror.

I think if the option was offered like accesorie by the dealer, it means that there is demand.Personally I like it.

I pretty much gave up on the idea of looking for a dimple fender once I noticed that some Nimrod PO had tack welded all the fenders to the body, then added bondo to make a smooth seam. I'm choosing to mount it just inside the bed on the front drivers side. We'll see how it all looks once all is done.
