My generator quit so I put an alternator on it, it doesn’t work however. What am I doing wrong? I hooked up the battery wire to the battery and the field wire to the positive post on the alternator. I hooked the idiot light wire up to a bulb. Any thoughts?

Sounds about right  Did you take a reading with an volt meter at the alternator "Battery" post? Then at the battery positive terminal? When engine is running, both should read 13.5+ volts. If not, then the alternator maybe bad...that is if your alternator is an internal regulator type. But I'm sure you know that if the alternator is an external regulator type, then you'll need to connect a voltage regulator to it.

Um...does the altenator have an internal regulator? Was it bought new? Both my heep and my truck use external regulators.
