Here in Connecticut on the registration form it asks for the gvw and the light weight. My truck is a 49 Chevy 6100 the data plate says 16,000 gvw. So I would assume since it's a 2 ton truck the unloaded weight "light weight" would be 12,000. I'm pretty sure it probably only weights in about 5,000. This my first big truck. does anyone have any insight on this subject?

Here are 1949 weights: shipping weights (no fuel/coolant) and curb weights (with fuel and coolant and spare tire if it was not standard equipment for your model). | | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 | "light weight" would be manufacturers curb weight [unladen vehicle with fluids], which would be found in the GM resto pack, page 53, about 5,000# .... there's been discussions here about what "GVW" meant back in the day, it's not as simple as your figuring Bill | | | | | Joined: Apr 2013 Posts: 12 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Apr 2013 Posts: 12 | Thanks a bunch guys for the info. I will try searching again for the gvw info. I was told that the 16, 000# means that's axle rating not chassis rating.

Axle weight ratings are known as GAWR(A=axle). Since your truck is rated 16000 GVW it is the total of the two axles which is probably 11000 rear and 5000 front in your instance. That info most likely isn't shown on the label but would appear on the build sheet or mfgr's information.
A search will offer more complete information. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 | GVW = Gross Vehicle Weight (what was included by GM in that fully-loaded weight is given at the links above)
The difference between the GVW and curb weight is the payload (defined at the links above).
If you would like to know the GM rating for what % of payload was carried over the rear axle as apposed to the % payload carried over the front axle, that information is in the Truck Data Book. I'll post that information, if you are interested.
A rough estimate (from my weak and untrustable memory) is less than 10% of payload was weight on the front axle/wheels and more than 90% of payload was weight on the rear axle/wheels (depending on the model of the truck).
vito 49 - What model/equipment 1949 61xx truck? 6102, 6103, 6108, 6109, 6112? single or dual wheels on the rear? size of wheels/tires?

That information is obtained by a calculation that includes the wheelbase, CA, body length, C/G, payload and distance between the body and cab to arrive at Weight Distribution as a % of front and rear payload. Add these to the tare weights of the chassis and body and you have number that mean something. That "something" is a feeling of security when you pull into the next weight station knowing beforehand that your OK. I have been OK and I have been not OK...OK is better.
