What are the best options for swapping out a smaller steering wheel in a stock 53 3100? I would like the cab to look as stock as possible. Is it possible to modify a 54 steering wheel to use with the 53 steering shaft?

I have seen a custom AD truck with a smaller diameter stock steering wheel.
AFAIK someone is making them now,not sure who but if I find out i'll let you know.

I've no doubt it will be expensive.....! frown

'53 and '54 use the same diameter steering wheel, 18". The steering wheels mounting is the same at least from '47-'93, possibly later (I haven't taken too many airbag style steering wheels off).
Are you planning on installing power steering? A smaller steering wheel will increase steering effort.

I second the opinion on the increased steering effort of a smaller steering wheel. I would be looking for a larger than stock wheel myself if my belly wasn't so big. Maybe I need to work on my big-assed belly.

I think I shared way too much personal information.

Thanks for your ideas. I need to get a tape and measure some of these steering wheels. I may be more comfortable if I can reduce the thickness of the seat back so I can sit further back an inch or so. Steering effort on my truck is very light--I'll find a 54 steering wheel and compare the diameter with mine.

Why didn't they build them that way to begin with??? Beautiful truck...even if it does look like a 56 Ford.
