when I revved the engine it smoothed out and got more pronounced when it idled back down...
any suggestions? a strategically placed capacitor maybe? a failing diode or rectifier?
voltage regulator?

What you describe are the classic symptoms of a failing voltage regulator. Well, that is, if I presume your vehicle has the standard generator/voltage regulator setup.
