Use the same year regulator as the generator if you are not going with an alternator. Follow the tech tips here for installing an alternator. Use an internally regulated alternator and no external regulator is needed.

When I was thinking of doing that at one time, it was recommended that I stay with the 55-57 years. Easier to get parts and they look stock.

I have a 1960 Chevrolet truck regulator (for a 12v 1960 truck generator) that attached to the 1954 truck firewall in the same holes as the 6v regulator.

ABC, i guess i'll be in the minority on this thread, but have you considered just staying at 6v and fixing the grounding? the 6v system works pretty well, for me at least.
just my 2cents.

I've converted all mine that I think of as drivers to 12 volt, and have used later '50s stuff to do it.

But just changing the charging system isn't enough. All the lights, the fuel guage, original radio, all need to be adapted or changed. Its not trivial, and if you don't have a real compelling reason it may not be worth the trouble... I sure wondered after the last one I did.

My primary reason is I could never keep a 6-volt battery charged because I never drive the 6-volt trucks enough. But I always have several 12-volt batterys around ready to go.

I should just buy a good 6-volt battery tender and make my life easier.

It's true. I really don't do anything but browse the Internet looking for trouble...
