Well I went to start my truck for the first since I've owned it, going over everything before that iniatial excitement of hearing your baby run for the first time.

No such luck, the starter would barely turn the engine over. Before you ask, I have checked everthing...

. battery is good
.engine turns over freely by hand
.thought starter must be binding...bushing gone etc.
.took start off, connected charger, pushed down peddal....starter turns fast and freely.

While the starter is turning over freely with the charger, you can grab the gear with your hand and make it come to a complete stop. I'm amazed that it even had enough balls to turn the engine some what.

Any ideas ????

ya say its original?. so must be 6 volt..?? and just turning the starter with a battery charger probably wont have enough amps to pull much of a load. The best way is to crank it and see what kind of amps the startin is pullin to know if engine is tight, or starter is draggin. Your six volt battery charger is probably not putting out enough amps to really test the starter, but id think you couldnt stop it with your hand unless its only putting out a 6 volt trickle charge, then you probably could.
Id say jump it with 12 volts to try it, it wont hurt anyting, just dont turn the lights on while jumpin. Those old 6 volt starters dont really spin (like a modern 12 volt system) anyway even if everything is good.

Make sure your battery connections are good and your cables are large enough (double ought). If you feel heat anywhere after trying the starter, you have a bad connection there.

How did you test the battery to know "it's good"?

Thanks for all the inputs. I went and double checked everthing and replaced the battery. The old girl fired up on the first go.
