I have a 1950 Chevy 3100 1/2 ton with a 216. The 216 is not the original. In researching the engine I determined that the block & head casting numbers are 3835849 & 3835517, which identifies the engine as a 52/53 216. Now for the strange part. The engine has the serial number DR140622CAL, the date code on the block says CON4 G167 and the engine has main and rod insert bearings, which could have came from a bearing/rod conversion kit that was once available, or the rods were converted. Is it possible that this might be a replacement engine rather thsn a rebuild? been replaced with a new one from the factory. Could have
burned it up from heavy use or abuse, cracked the block by not
keeping antifreeze in it. It would have been delivered without
a SN and the installer would have been expected to transfer the
SN from the original engine to the new short block or fitted block.
