For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jul 2012 Posts: 59 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jul 2012 Posts: 59 | I adjusted the shifter to the specs and the truck doesn't want to go into 2nd. I can go from 1st to 3rd but not 3rd to second. The bracket that comes off the steering column to linkage that ends at the tranny doesn't get into the right position and therefore not allowing it to get into 2nd gear. I tried looking for bushings but can't seem to find anything to make it more sturdy. Has anyone had this issue or any advice? Thanks. This is the only thing holding up my truck from driving it on the street. I have a 53 chevy truck with 3 on the tree.

I am using the same rods that came with the truck and engine. There is a lot of slop on the bracket that is closest to the firewall and I'm thinking that is the issue. when it doesn't want to go into 2nd I move the bracket on the rod a little and then it will go into gear but then a couple times after shifting a couple times it doesn't want to go into 2nd again. I really am bewildered at what to do. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 | closest to the firewall is the 1st/reverse lever - have you opened the box on the column and checked for wear on the forks and pawl inside? usually problems like that are misalignment in the box, could be the spring inside [next half dozen pics in that album apply too] Bill | | |
