Has anybody tried putting a Isuzu pup engine in a big bolt? I had a pup when I was younger it was a great engine. I wonder if the Chevy Belhousing would bolt up. Thanks Jay

How few HP are they, and what does a a pup weigh compared to a big bolt?

There are other diesels that are good choices.

Since the P'up and the LUV are essentially the same vehicle, the specs should be the same. According to the specs shown on the GM site, the LUV deisel is only 58 hp and 93 ft/lbs.

My Dad had a couple chevettes with the isuzu diesel that salesman drove. They got great mileage and held up well. Downside to them was no power...
I'd look more for a solution.

yeah I would love to have a detriot 3/71 or a 4/53 but I can,t believe the price people want for a worn out engine. more than I paid for my old trucks combined. Most of the 235s were under a 100 hp. so I figured it was a attempt at affordable power for my 51 gmc 450. thanks Jay

So what is wrong with building a GMC 270 or 302 for your 450? And then everything would fit.

It had a 270 they pulled it and installed a 292 and converted it o 12 volt. I just love the Detroit sound. I don't think the six will make the same noise in the twin stacks.

Stock is cheap, stick with the GM 6 if money is the major factor.

To do a nice job on any sort of Diesel conversion it takes time and money, usually lots more than you can imagine from the start. In my experience the cost of the engine is a small part of the whole project/cost because updating an old truck to make good and safe use of that better engine takes so much more.

Not to say you can't plop any sort of diesel engine that fits in there on the cheap... But if that's the results you are after you'll probably be better off leaving the truck stock, it'll look better, be worth more, and you will have saved time and money.

A 4BT Cummins should be a very straightforward swap but not eat up with HP. It'd be great for going to shows and saving on fuel to get there, probably never save what the conversion cost..

I once put a new snoplow on a diesel LUV and it was not heavy at all but that thing would only run 40 MPH with the plow attached. What a total pice of junk IMO. (hwy travel position naturally). So I'd say stay as far away from it as you can get. Your think HP only and it's torque that pushes a truck.

That same diesel came in the Chevette, if you had to go up hill into the wind you were in trouble....
