The windshield regulator on my '46 is frozen up. I know there is a strap that screws on to the windshield frame, but how do I take it apart if the windshield won't open?

As I recall, the crank mechanism bolts to the underside of the dash. The "strap " you are referring to screws to a hinge that mounts to the center window frame at bottom. You will need to free up the window frame to get it out. Chances are the rubber gasket in the window frame is junk anyhow, so you could cut around the frame to release it. There is a good " how to " post in the tech section, covering rebuilding the regulator.

It's possible the hinges on the windshield are frozen.

Sounds like it's time for penetrant oil to loosen everything up.

...it may be possible to loosen the two bolts holding it on and lowering the assembly. Then, put the crank handle on the assembly and try to wind the tongue out as far as it will go. You may get lucky and the tongue come all the way out if the little stop button on the end is gone, or the assembly is worn that much.....
The windshield will HAVE to come loose one way or the other but with the assembly hanging or the tongue all the way out may help...or may not? Just a thought.

yes, the hinge was frozen on my 37 and it took some patience to keep from ruining it.

Thanks for the ideas. I was checking the truck for rain leaks today and found that the windshield is not tightly closed. With the little bit of play there is, I could see that the strap is attached using hex-head screws. I think I can get in there with an open-end wrench.

Good luck, Ed. Most of the screws I've seen were allen head. I understand the leaks....especially at the corners. When you put it all back together be sure to use plenty of glass sealer. They can be a booger to fix. I've worked on mine off and on including a recent New frame/rubber and glass. Darn if I still don't get a tat on the corner.

It took me forever to get the windshield out of my 38. Every thing was frozen but I just kept soaking it and working with it finally got it loose. It took forever but I won.
