Hello,

Im buying repop window cranks for my 52. I want to replace the black knobs with the correct maroon ones for that year. They sell the maroon knobs seperate. Anyone out there ever replaced these? What is the best way to go about it??

I bought the same set up. New handles with maroon knobs. Look like a pain to replace. They are going in the glove box for the new/next owner!!!! Probably some kind of special tool for those "rivets".

The ones I bought from Jim Carter a few years ago, had the maroon colour knobs on them. Not sure if they still sell them that way

I wonder if there has been a study done on the history of the
crank handles. The ones on my '50, 3604 have metal knobs on
them, so when did they change to the maroon plastic knobs???

Denny, it appears 1951 was the last year for chrome door handle knobs.

I should have maroon on my handles....but I don't. The repops came with the chrome ones.

And, they changed to black in 1954.

Also, I think I got the information Alvin linked-to from Jim Carter and others.

Chevs of the 40s lists the following:

47-50 chrome
51-53 maroon
54-57 black

Not to confuse the issue but there is also a fair number of these handles that came with factory black knobs in place of chrome. I will shoot some comparison pictures when I get home.
Here is a shot from a one owner 54, these are not replacements as I have seen them on other trucks.

1954 truck knobs were black.

The confusion seems to be the year in which the trucks changed from chrome to maroon window crank knobs

Soon after 1954, the GM replacement knobs probably were black (as sold for all years by Jim Carter, Classic Parts, etc).

makes it clear that ’51 was the last year for chrome knobs, ’52 & ’53 were maroon and of
course in ‘54/’55 they went with the black interior knobs. This seemed to hold true for
the wiper knob also.

Makes more sense to me now why I have seen the black handles mixed and matched with chrome and maroon. That was probably the replacement handle you got if you went back to the dealer after 1954. A little trivia for the group, what did Chevrolet call the window mechanism in the new 1947 trucks? Lazy-Tang!

Musta been a mid year thing. My November build '51 had maroon knobs.

Don't suppose there is a possibility that someone might
have changed them sometime in the last 62 years, do ya Mark??
A well used truck could very well have had worn out knobs
on the original handles and had them switched out for a
good set new or from a donor.
You got the chrome wiper knob on your '51?

I remember the doors had remnants of the original panels.

...and the original question was about how does one go about changing the knobs to the correct one....say put the maroon knobs on a repop handle that has black ones on it.
...is there and easy DIY way?? Heck, I'd like to put some maroon ones on mine!
