My ? is what or how to seal the rear opening on the trans when changing to an open drivshaft??? I changed (will be) the engine to a 73 250 and kept the sm 420 4 speed it had in the truck originally. thanks, BILL | | | | | Joined: Nov 2004 Posts: 338 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2004 Posts: 338 | Just find an open driveline SM420 and use it as is or steal the retainer off of it. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2004 Posts: 1,418 ODSS Lawman | | ODSS Lawman Joined: Aug 2004 Posts: 1,418 | You have two options. You can tear your SM420 apart and change the rear housing for an open dirveline setup or swap the whole transmission.

You only need to change the yoke and rear housing. This can be easily done with the transmission in the truck.
