I would like to change the entire rear axle on my 51 3100 and keep the original 4 speed. My ? is what or how to seal the rear opening on the trans when changing to an open drivshaft??? I changed (will be) the engine to a 73 250 and kept the sm 420 4 speed it had in the truck originally.
thanks, BILL

Just find an open driveline SM420 and use it as is or steal the retainer off of it.

You have two options. You can tear your SM420 apart and change the rear housing for an open dirveline setup or swap the whole transmission.

Sweet is making it sound harder than it is.
You only need to change the yoke and rear housing. This can be easily done with the transmission in the truck.
