I bought a new battery from Antique Auto Batteries and followed the instructions for setting it up - added the proper amount of electrolyte. I had it on a 10 amp charger all night (the charger read that it was putting out 5 amps). When I checked it with my volt meter this morning it only read 0.5 volts which rapidly discharged as I looked at the meter.

Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

the main thing you're doing wrong is asking folks who will give you opinions when you should be gettin on the horn to the vendor to find out the facts!

maybe you didn't fill it properly, maybe you didn't charge it properly, maybe you didn\'t check the SG , maybe it was bad product,

but if ya really want an idea from here - maybe you should rethink the desireability of having an "antique" battery when battery technology has advanced so much since 53

I had bad luck with my Antique Auto Battery too. Got mine to charge up ok at first but it kept sweating out electrolyte at a seam on top of the battery and exposing the plates. I finally gave up and got another battery locally.

The problem with their warranty is that you don't get your money back, you get a replacement for the defective battery. I am not interested in sending it back as that's too much of a hassle (drainage, packing, shipping, buy more electrolyte to charge the replacement battery when it gets here, etc.) so I haven't contacted Antique Auto Battery with my problems. I'm not unhappy with them, just the battery. If I order from them in the future, it will be one of the sealed units. The other problem is that you either have to buy another battery locally to use or let the vehicle sit idle while you're waiting for shipping.

I'm sorry to hear of your problems with the battery. I was hoping that I was an isolated case and it was just my turn in the barrel.

a new battery if its good should charge overnight at ten amps and have enough power to sling the motor out of the truck i think you may have gotten a bad battery.
