I installed a rubber gasket on the front top cowl vent and it works perfect, closes flush. The drivers side no so much. This gasket came in foam. I glued it to the cab and installed the vent. If I hold the inside handle closed the vent still is not quite flush. The gasket wants to push it out. If I push on the vent from the outide it will close but will not stay closed, foam pushes it open. There also does not seem to be any way to hold that vent closed. The handle has no catch to keet it in place. What could I have wrong.

Here is a ’50 outside shot showing the foam seal in place: http://www.pbase.com/dennygraham/image/148636643 It sits flush with the raised metal edge of the grove. And here is the inside slot, the handle and slot are a little different after ’49 and look like this one: http://www.pbase.com/dennygraham/image/148636645 You may have to give it a little time before the foam seats but still you should be able to latch the handle an keep the door closed. Not that much of a slot on mine. I may have to file it some but now I see how it should work. Thanks for the reply. I do have my foam gasket on just like you show.

It makes no sense to put the notch toward the front, are you sure someone didn't weld a
new plate in place of the old one? I can't imagine any reason why or how they would want
to do that but you never know.

vents, plates and handles came out of???
I think you're right on the money about the very early AD not
having a notch, and them adding it when the spring didn't keep
it closed. I would have thought it was by the end of the 1947
run after they had a bunch of them back to the dealer with complaints.
Are you sure about the year of your truck Bart, i.e., 1948????

Denny the picture you posted was from an early 49' 5-window Deluxe 3100 I owned. Very original and well-optioned truck. First scratch had to come sometime. This did solve the problem, see the vent now. I cant say I am liking the foam gasket but may be able to do something with that. I think I will change it to a rubber gasket. Thanks for the help.
