Was going through some old pictures last night and found these of my Dad and one of my Grandfather's more unusual company trucks. I believe this is a 1949 Deluxe Cab that was converted to a Crew Cab pickup by Tulsa Body Works in Tulsa, OK for their business; Alkay Oil Company. That is my Dad at 14 years old standing next to the truck. Kind of neat with the dual side mount spares and the tool box in the bed.

That is pretty nice. Some of these body modifiers today think that's a cool way to change their cab. And now we know it was around years ago. Very cool pics.

And that's a 3-door cab, right? Very cool.

I never would of thought they did that back then.

There were a few companies that made conversions like these in the 40's and 50's. Most of those companies specialized in ambulances and buses. I saw a late 1950's Chevy Suburban with 5 doors on each side! I wanted it so bad, but the wife put a halt to that idea pretty quickly. A really nice crew cab 1957 Chevy pickup with Napco 4x4 setup was on Ebay before. If you can think of it some company or individual probably made it back in the day. I still really want a Cantrell 1947 Chevy Suburban woody.

Odd but interesting. What happened to the truck?

Tulsa Body Works in Tulsa, OK made a lot of crew cab trucks and oil field beds for Dowell, etc. They did a lot of work for my Grandfather and my Dad on their Coralena and Alkay Oil Company Trucks. This truck was bought new in Otis, Kansas, driven to Michigan in the summer of 1949 and then back to Tulsa in the fall of 1949 when it was converted to the 3-Door Crew Cab. It was sold in the Russell, Kansas area in the early '50's and I don't know where it went after that.

My buddy Pete (Dreamstreet Rod and Custom) built one last year and sold it on fleabay. The only nine window truck you will ever see. It was crazy.

I was wondering if one had one of these crew cab conversions of years ago and showed it in a judged show would the judges take some points away for not being the way it left the factory,clubs will accept dealer installed stuff but what with one of these. I think I will post this question over at the AACA forum since I like to mess with them a little.

I asked on the mostly all original forums about one of those crew cab conversions and if someone had one do not show it with the original clubs if you want to win a trophy.

I have a friend here in Kansas that has a 64' extended cab truck that also came from an oil company. It was meant to be used as a crew truck for the oil patch. He's since rebuilt it with a Chevy V-8, fresh paint, 700R4, and all the other goodies and said he likes driving it, but can't afford to put the fuel in it to enjoy it very often. Get's about 9 mpg.

Do the shows/competitions by "original clubs" allow period correct conversions, such as the Cantrell or Campbell woodies? If they allow those conversions, would they allow an original crew-cab conversion (a rarity, but there were such crew-cabs advertised, at least in 1954).

From what I have been told if there is documentation on the conversion then the original shows wont pick it part and start deducting points but it sounds like if I had one I would take it to truck only shows and the heck with the all original crowd.

The conversion looks like a stock panel or suburban right rear door (barn door)was used. The 3rd door sheetmetal has a bit of extra roundness to it as compared with the original front door. Stock glass and hinge location. The roof is the only real problem. Use a suburban/panel body and graft a 5 window cab rear to it, or stretch a pickup cab and fabricate the roof?
I believe a suburban body was used. But that's only a guess. What say you?

That's what I would do. I'm not a huge fan of the correct police anyway!

Hey... Thanks for sharing those pictures of your dad and his truck.

I have heard a few stories of conversions to crew cabs using 2 cabs and sticking them together and making up the back doors with two doors each side.

I am not sure about using a panel or suburban body as I think the roof on them gets a bunch higher than the pickup about were you would want to join up the pickup back window section.
