I have a 62 1/2 ton Chevy truck with original equipment signal lights that work fine when activated but won't cancel after I finish my turn. What new parts should I order to correct the problem before I get run over? The lights self cancel when I turn right but not left. Does anyone know where I can order the necessary parts to correct the problem? Thanks in advance for your help!

Before I ordered any parts, I would try pulling the steering wheel and having a look.

I've never pulled apart a '62, but I had the exact same issue with my '55.1 signals. There's a pair of cams that lock the lever in place during a turn, and a really odd-shaped flat spring that maintains pressure on the cams (anchored in the center under the steering shaft and reaches up on either side to the cams). On the back of the steering wheel is a steel ring with about 1/2" tab sticking down into the signal assembly. As you turn the wheel, the tab kicks the cam free and releases the signal switch.

In my case, the cancelling tab was fine, but the spring was broken. I had to fabricate a new one, as I haven't seen any vendors selling just that spring. I must have made the spring too beefy, because now the cams won't hold the switch in place.

on my 64 i have the same problem because i had to adjust the tierod ends because the steering wouldn't turn all the way to the right.the steering wheel is off center.i know i have to pull the wheel and straighten it.if your wheel is not straight that may be your problem.

Same problem on my '68 C-10. Turn signal canceling cam. Most likely the springs in there are shot or missing. It's also possible that you have a broken part in there that won't let it function correctly. It shouldn't be hard to pull it apart and tell. Obsolete Chevy should have the parts that you need. They are in Nashville, GA. I can get some other info of theirs if you need it. Hope this helps. John.

emdabbs, this is a common problem with these old Chebbies. Your local parts house will have what you need. Just tell them the problem. Might have to talk to the oldest parts person. Probably a buck or so a spring. May as well replace both while you are in there. Mike smile

THANKS GUYS FOR THE RESPONSES! I WILL PROCEED WITH PULLING THE WHEEL AND SEE WHAT THE DAMAGE IS-JUST THOUGHT IT MAY BE SOMETHING SIMPLE AS I DIDN'T WANT TO START TEARING THINGS APART AND LOSE BOTH RIGHT AND LEFT SIGNALS. GUESS IT ISN'T STILL COVERED BY WARRENTY AFTER 41 YEARS? I DO LOVE THESE OLD STOVEBOLTS--NO COMPUTERS AND NO "SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHTS".EMDABBS

Make sure you mark the position of the steering wheel so you can put it back on straight and centered
