I haven't been under it to look at the transmission. Most of them had a New Process 541, but you never know what has been done in 50 years. A guy on the OldGMC site posted a Craigslist listing. Otherwise I would have never found it. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2000 Posts: 1,399 Camp Commandant | | Camp Commandant Joined: Nov 2000 Posts: 1,399 | Nice Ken. Congrats. Wish 600's could hold a 4-71, that would be great. Had one spotted, don't want to deal w/ gasser.

I blew the doors off of 671 Detroits with my old 550 that had the 370 gas engine. A 471 with 143 HP with the big injectors would have been a moving road block compared to the 370 gas that had about 100 more HP. | | | | | Joined: Nov 1995 Posts: 5,732 24601 | | 24601 Joined: Nov 1995 Posts: 5,732 | Great find, Ken! When you get a chance, send us a write up and some of those pics for a Gallery write up. And about looking like the kid in the photo again ... 10 minutes with Photoshop is all I'll need ... Shoot, you looked pretty good in South Bend -- make it 5 minutes. That truck is going to look great sitting next to Billy's 860 at Kansas City one of these years. Regards, John

To some here in big bolt land that noise is a purty as song bird on a sunny spring day!!!
Ken, get her ready for KC in 2014. I think mine will finally be done by then. Again, nice find. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,962 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,962 | I have nothing against Detroits. I have one in my yard truck. When I wrecked my 550 in 1968, I looked real close at an 860 with a 671, but I was hauling a lot of grain in those days and we used to gross 100,000 because Texas really didn't enforce their weight laws in those days. A discovered that a Cummins pulled the hills with a whole lot less shifting. I still run Cummins hauling bulk commodities. I like to make jokes about Detroits though. Central Freight out of Waco, TX ran all GMC with Detroits in the 50's and 60's. Every truck stop s___house poet used to write, "If speed kills, Central drivers should live forever." and "Detroits make very good stationary engines. Put one in a truck and it becomes almost stationary." But you must remember I am from a generation of drivers who took pride in their choice of trucks and made fun of the rest. We spent hours in truck stops bragging about "how fast them trucks would go". There is no way I could make a living with any truck that was built in the 50's. I admit my old trucks are nothing more than toys now, and kids have always like different toys. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2011 Posts: 5,096 Crusing in the Passing Lane | | Crusing in the Passing Lane Joined: Jun 2011 Posts: 5,096 | I was mainly concerned w/ the front axle, if it was rated for the weight of a 4-71. I drove Dr. Bill's 3-71 tanker to KC and back, that was adequite power for a hobby truck for me. One more jug and a turbo would help out.

You must keep in mind that the steering axle was not only designed to carry the weight of the engine but also part of the load. We usually put the 5th wheel about 18" in front of the drive axle which put about 3k load on the steering axle. | | |
