I have a 52 Chevy 3800. It has the original radio which is now working on the bench. There is not a hole on the cowling for the antenna. Can someone tell me which side the antenna goes on. It seems like it may have been on the drivers side as the antenna lead in cable from the radio was running to that side of the truck under the dash from the radio but not connected to an antenna. Thanks, Jim

It goes on the driver's side cowl between the hood and the windshield. It needs to be located in a precise manner using a template. When done correctly the hood clears it by about 1/4".

Some printing setups do not print out in full scale. The clue here is the measure the diameter of the hole on the printout.

Don't feel bad Denny. I have always had problems opening some of Tim's links. I even stopped and deleted cookies/browsing history and I still can't get them open. hmmmm

My 1/2 ton 1953 panel came with a hole in the passenger side cowl. (Obviously not correct but I have to use it) It seems to be located all right. It's very close to the windshield rubber. On the inside, it's behind the glove box and the heater, not much room there. As soon as I find the correct antenna, I will know if it clears the open hood.

Actually I've never had a problem with any of Tim's links until this winter when I finally
got the time to duck into the 'Bolt every once in a while. I’ve spent many the afternoon
or evening surfing Tim’s site in the past years. Always a pleasure and always something
new. I can't even get his 1954Advance-Design.com to open any more.
Must be the Scotsman in me Gus, I hate to spend money. Been doing all this on an old
hand me down confuser that I've had for a decade or more. But....it is getting kind of
slow lately.

One detail about the radio antenna is the the correct antenna uses a bracet that attaches to the inner cowl structure. I think this is done for strength as the cowl is not all that thick.

That's right on Fred. The original antenna as about 20 feet long and without the brace
it wobbles all over the place. It's especially bad when it's fully extended and your
running along at hi-way speeds. It also helps when you pull into the garage and forgot
the antenna was still up.
In spite of the high cost of the reproduction antennas the brace that's included with it
doesn't fit very well and I ended up making my own.

Well Denny, I wouldn't have admitted it but I am one of those people that caught the top of the antenna on the garage door opening! I live in an area that has a very weak AM band signal. It is amazing how much the gain goes up once the antenna is extended past the top of the cab.

Hey, I was getting real good at straighening out the antenna before I had to park her for the BIG move. Nothing to be ashamed off.

Thanks all for the info on the antenna location. I have printed the template and will go from there. Not knowing which side the antenna should be located was one thing. I could tell from the area on either side, there would not be much room for error when considering opening the hood. Thanks again guys. Great forum.

After running a program called traceroute and performing other diagnoses on computers having problems getting to my website, I have found two solutions:

Clear web browser cache and history - this is the less likely of the two solutions.

If you know how to change your network settings, changing the DNS server address settings in the Network Settings or Network Control Panel almost always solves the problem.

The most probable reason why people have problems accessing my website is because I have had the 1954advance-design.com domain name for over 15 years. During that time, I have had to change hosting companies about five times for a variety of reasons (they have gone out of business or merged). When that happens, the IP address associated with my domain name changes.

The problem is that whenever someone types my domain name, it gets translated into an IP address, and there is the possibility that an old/incorrect IP address is being provided/used somewhere between your PC and my website. If Internet Service Providers purged or updated old/incorrect/dead addresses, the problem is almost always eliminated. The two free DNS servers that I give the addresses for at the link above are properly maintained by Google - addresses are regularly checked, purged, and updated. Those Google DNS servers are free for anyone to use (in place of the DNS server addresses provided by local ISPs).

The only other solution is for me to get a different/new domain name. That would cause more problems, because I have posted my domain name in a lot of places/posts - this would always result in an error message every time my old name is clicked-on.

Sorry. The Internet was brilliantly designed to be efficient and reliable. However, parts of the Internet have to be maintained; but, many ISP's do not know how to maintain their DNS Servers (or, they simply do not care).

I just spent $100 last month with my local internet server
to get hooked up to the Frontier DSL line here at the new
house. I'm sure you can understand why I'm real reluctant
to change any network settings and have to go back and
spend another $100 to get him to straighen out what I've
messed up.

What ever it is Tim, I've suddenly this summer lost the
ability to access any links that you post any more even
your website. I don't understand why your's is the "only"
site or links that I'm having problems with.

Try to remember that your talking to a guy that is even
below computers 101 anymore when it comes to the internet.

I did go in and clear (delete) all of the cookies in the
IE cache. Had to log back in here again and expect to be
doing that for the next month or two now. But.....no
difference, still can't connect to any of your links.

Denny,
have you tried a Google search for the site and then using one of the results? That might just work.

Nope, won't open from Google search and won't open from the
link you posted Bill. But I can open all the links in both
your replys.

Hope Jim got an answer to his question before we took off
in this other direction.

Sorry, Denny. My website gets about 35 "visitors" a day, with the average "visitor" spending about 2.5 minutes before leaving my website.

This month, I have had visitors from 10 countries and about 40% of them were using Internet Explorer.

I think that Jim, the original poster, was able to download the template/instructions.

Well I don't know how anyone could spend only 2.5 minutes at
your site Tim, I always end up spending hours there, that is
when I could get to it in the past. Next to the Stovebolt and
Keith Hardie's site your's is at the top of my list when I'm
researching a project.

Fred & Denny,

If chrome solves Denny's problem, I will be pleased and surprised. It is worth a try.

Since clearing cache/cookies did not work in the browser Denny is using, I'd bet the problem is with his DSL ISP's Domain Name Servers having old addresses that need to be cleared/updated.

Thanks for the suggestion - I hope it works.

Hey guys -

I delayed jumping into the discussion until I was sure that the original radio antenna question was resolved.

Tim - I sometimes get an error when connecting to your site. The problem usually corrects itself after a short wait and a few more attempts. I always get on eventually - maybe the next day. Your site and Keith Hardy's site are my two go-to sources for correctly documented info about my ol'truck, so I would freak out if I was permanently locked out.

Tech info:
> MS Windows 8
(same problem with I had Windows Vista)
> I connect via "favorites" in paid version of AOL 9.7, Revision 4343.30
> MS Windows Explorer 9
> HP 6160 laptop

We got Denny's PC to work for a short time by changing his DNS settings. If those settings have not changed, I am at a loss for suggestions for a solution.

My paranoia leads me to think that one possibility is that Verizon DSL is as devious as Time Warner Cable (and Google) regarding their "use policy/agreement" (in the massive fine print). Verizon might have poorly maintained DNS servers and Verizon might not want its users to bypass their DNS servers (they are able to thwart/stop this). Why? Verizon might be selling information regarding the types of places that users are visiting (Google does this, as do other DNS services). I apologize for wasting you reading-time with this complicated and paranoid conjecture.

Nah, not time wasted, long as we got the antenna thing
straightened out.
Gotta be something with the DSL, settings are the same as they
were the night we spoke. Worked that evening but not the next
day. Just tried the newer Dell in the office running Windows 7
and I get the same message, "Internet Explorer cannot display
the webpage"
Funny thing is Tim, your's is the only website that I have a
problem with. When I click on any of the links you post they
the address is always this viglink.com thing, like this:

Denny - the VGI-link is added by the forum software on 'clickable' links, it's a "referrer" thing that tells the site you go to where you came from in case you buy something, so the 'bolt gets a penny .... and I've found some sites don't respond well to it, confuses them, maybe especially with addresses that don't include the 'WWW' - try copy/pasting Tims address [http://1954advance-design.com/] directly into a new browser window and see if you get there, I've never had any problem reaching Tims site .... also check that DNS change on your 'puter, it may be that after shutting down and re-booting it defaulted to the original on it's own

Won't work with this one either Bill, and I've checked the DNS settings several times and have them set to the ones that Tim and I discussed.

In my experience, Tim's site likes a machine that will "get in and get out". I can get there easier on the computer using cable modem than I can can my laptop on a wireless and DSL. The more traffic on the wireless, the less chance I have of making a connection. The more stuff running on the computer, the less chance of getting on. I have no idea the how and why but have learned that to be the case.

Three oclock in the morning Greg, shouldn't be much traffic now,
nothing running on the computer but the browse. Must be the DSL
cuz I was at his site several times a week at the other place,
where I had a Comcast Cable High Speed Internet connection.
Never once had a problem. What doesn't make sense to me is his
is the only web site I have trouple with here at the new place.
Tims links to TOCMP load just fine, but nothing liked to his
home page will load.
