How was the carburetor return spring mounted on engines with W-1 Carter? Was it on the linkage or up at the carburetor itself? I have two mounted on my intake and cannot find a good way to mount springs. I am using cable linkage and am trying to keep a uncluttered system.

Thanks Tiny, I was afraid of that. I knew they had to be on the linkage, there is just no place on the carb itself.

Mine fastens to a clip on an oil pan bolt below the carb.

Hi Joe, The neatest cable set up I've ever seen was using the original gas pedal and rod through the firewall. The fellow made a small vertical steel plate that was bolted to an original hole for the bellcrank on side of the block. This little plate had a 90 deg. bend for attachment to the block and the larger part was standing perpendicular to the block. The end of his rod from the pedal ran through a hole in this 'plate' and had a bend at the end that connected to his cable, also mounted to the plate, carb end then looped up to his carbs.

Thanks Jim, mine is a 250 ci engine with cable all the way inside to the pedal. I am building up a dual W-1 set up. I guess I am going to have to add a lever to the throttles for the springs to work against. I thought maybe the carbs had a spring bracket both mine were missing. They do have the choke cable bracket, but that doesn't really help me any.

Joe, You also may want to look at the linkage kit from Langdon's Stovebolt, pics on his website. I have his modern carbs and this linkage is smooth and very solid. May glean some mounting ideas although his carbs are totally unlike anything vintage.
