I just got a 1956 3100 with a 350 small block, and i want to put headers in it. I bought full length Hooker Headers that summit racing claimed would fit but the steering shaft gets in the way. Any suggestions on which headers i should use?

On the AD trucks, I've always hed to use block huggers. For those with Camaro clips, Sanderson makes a modified block hugger.

I have a set of 350/400 block huggers I'll let go of cheap. Picked em up new from Summit for my Stingray but I sold the car before they ever went on. PM me if you're interested.

Chevy Ram Horns have good flow and look good. They run up to 2 1/2" on Corvettes. Nice fit and A/C mounting. They don't leak! Craigslist, Ebay or Stovebolt. The diff between those and headers would only be about 2-5 HP on a stock 350. There is a pair on my Craigslist (Phoenix) right now for a mid 70's Corvette, $40. Search: ram horn to see what they look like. There is no way of knowing for sure if a pair of manifolds fit with a certain engine swap until you try them. Each swap has a little different engine location. Most V8 exhaust manifolds, headers or otherwise, in TF trucks are very close to the steering box.

I used a set of 65-85 1/2 ton 1 5/8 tube full length headers years ago in a 56 3100. Had the stock front mounts, and cleared everything. I think they were a cheap set of headmans - all I could afford at he time - I think I actually got them at Auto zone. The only thing was that the collectors pointed down slightly - not a problem on the dragstrip ( SMILE) but a pain to hook up a street system to.This was 84 when I was running on a high school budjet.

C4 Corvette shorty headers. Found them for $10 bucks at a swap meet. Took the heat shields off and wrapped them. Turned them upside down to clear the power steering box. Bought a bunch of 2.5" mandrel bends from Summit racing and welded up a dual exhaust system, which exits in front of each rear wheel. It's wrapped so that things don't start melting in the engine bay.

Looks a little odd, but it works very well.

By the way, this is a Chevy 283. Rochester Quadrajet carb. With 3.50 gears in a Dana 60 rear and the original SM420 transmission, it gets 20 mpg on the highway.
