Your step-by-step documentation of your experience at your website has been helpful. The project still freaks me out & I'll probably wait until fall. Now would be a good time since I have the engine out but I don't have a garage & I don't want to leave my brandy new rebuild hanging on the engine hoist any longer than necessary. Yeah right! If I'm being truthful, I gotta grow a bit more hair on my exhaust manifold before I undertake the project! Anyhow, I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to document your experience & make it available for the rest of us. BTW - noticed you're a Gibson man. I was too for a long time but got seduced by Takamine about 18 months ago & I switched over like a $2 hooker!

HA! That's funny. Takamine's are great guitars! But they can't match up to a 35-year-old Gibson Hummingbird! LOL!
Rewiring my truck with the EZ-Wire kit was freaking me out, too ... but once I started getting into it, I realized -- it's a whole lot simpler than it looks! All those wires, at first, look like enough spaghetti to feed a couple of third-world countries! But you just take one connection at a time and is sure isn't brain surgery. Jump in ... you'll be surprised.
I'm glad you find my site-posts helpful, bro' ... I have fun documenting all the improvements I'm making on my stovebolt. If I ever get "finished" I'll have to buy another and start all over, because this is just too much fun!
Is "finishing" a possibility? I wonder!
Next time, I think I'd love to build a convertible rat rod!

Is "finishing" a possibility? I wonder! Alan I saw a beautifully finished AD at the Seattle Roadster Show a couple weeks ago. I asked the owner a bunch of questions and one of the things I learned was that he had spent in excess of $200,000 building the truck. I think his was done when he ran out of money...

I can't imagine what I could do to my truck to get it up in THAT range! I mean, a "show" truck, yes ... but who wants to drive around in one of those?? HERE is a GREAT read about the difference between 3-wire and 1-wire alternators.

But one wire at a time, and next thing I knew we were crankin her over and trying the lights.

I decided to do so because the battery wasn't holding a charge even though the batter and alternator tested out and the entire engine wiring harness from the firewall to the headlights had been replaced previously. I also check all grounds at the voltage regulator, frame-to-body, engine-to-frame, etc. I replace the horn relay, voltage regulator, points, plug wires, coil, condenser and still couldn't isolate the problem.
Long story short, the entire interior is out to make way for new floor pans, kick panels, inner rocker panels, correct tranny hump (the previous owner did a cobbled up job of replacing the tranny hump when swapping a manual for an 400 turbo), cab insulation and sound deadening. I also thought it would be a good time to install the factory correct automatic steering column and correct the power steering gear box alignment with a REZ Engineering retro kit (again the previous owner did a cobbled up job of installing the power steering gear box that created a radical angle at the rag joint).
I then decided to do a little touch up in the engine compartment, only to discover the inner fenders needed some rust repair in the usual places. I now have the entire front clip off the truck in preparation for new inner fenders and a fresh coat of paint in the engine compartment. After all of this is put back properly, I will complete installation of the American Autowire wiring harness that set this whole chain of events into motion.
I too was overwhelmed by the spaghetti mess I saw after laying out the new harness on my bench, however I decided to take the advice of many others that have come before me and "take it one connection at a time". The wiring seems insignificant considering all of the other elements I have undertaken as a result of a battery that wouldn't hold a charge. The funny thing is I don't regret a bit of my decision to do it right while I have my '66, K-10 in my garage.
Best of luck with your wiring challenges.
