I have installed a 235 in my "52" truck and now installing the original 216 radiator. I have new mounting pads but the original mount had three pieces on each side which appear to be shims. Would that be what they are? I have no sheet metal installed yet, just the engine on the frame so I can not tell how it all will line up. I went with the short water pump. Will I have a problem cooling due to the fan being somewhat lower on the radiator then original.

Yes, metal shims were used under the radiator, in addition to rubber pad/pads. Those shims would assist in obtaining proper front sheet metal alignment.

Many people use the short-shaft water pump successfully. My guess is that if the block is internally clean, and coolant flows freely throughout the block/head, you will have no problems. However, many people think that using a water pump relocation plate is the ideal configuration, since it places the water pump in the correct orientation to the radiator.
