My father bought me a 1950 GMC 100 5 window for my 16th birthday. It was a daily driver for a farmer down in Crab Orchard, Kentucky. I always wanted an old pickup and my father made my dream come true. I tinkered with it when I was in high school and parked it in the barn and headed off to college. I am now 32 and my father passed away this summer. I am now motivated to begin a full on restoration. It will be a slow restore since I am a school teacher in Las Vegas and my truck is at my parents house in Michigan. The motor is tired and in need of a full rebuild. Body needs work and all of that other stuff. Where is a man to start with this? Do I send the motor and trans out for rebuild first or start body work? I would love the input. Thanks in advance.

MFW, Welcome to the Stovebolt Page. First congrats on being a teacher and second for saving a piece of history and particularly a piece of family history.

Since this is the welcome Centre your questions will be better answered in the other forums. Just post in the most appropiate ones related to your question. You'll get lots of responses and answers.
The short answer is usually to get it to run and stop. If possible then drive it while "it" tells you what it needs and you decide what you REALLY want to do with it. Original, or with some modifications.
Buy you an assembly, and a shop manual. They are also available on line just check out the links here. No stupid questions here and we are here to help and I'm sure you'll find some bolters who live close by....just keep watch.

My neighbor is building a 50 GMC also but not a 5 window. He had no motor/tranny so he is going small block chevy but keeping it "original looking". Good luck and how about a pic when you can.

what part of Michigan you in? I was military in the U.P.

I'd rather walk and carry a Chevy hub cap than ride in a Ferd.
I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you smile

MFW, I too placed my 1948 1/2 ton chevrolet pick-up at my folks for 16 years and recently spent 3 years and $5,000 and now I drive it about. Good luck and have fun restoring it. V/R, Nick Cavallaro, Bel Air, MD

I am from Pinckney, Michigan. I had to move to find a job and I figured I would move some place fun. Well, 7 years later I am still here. HAHA, but I will spend my summers working on it and the school year back in NV tracking down parts. Thanks

Welcome MFW, sorry to hear about your father. Hopefully getting this truck going will be good therapy. There are different ways to go about it. I just stripped everything off, got the engine done, rebuilt or fixed everything as I went along and after 5 years, I put it all back together. Without this site, it wouldn't have happened. Good luck.
