i have the original deluxe heater that attaches to the big square hole on passengers inside wall. in order to keep more of the cold air outside and the warm air inside, ive thought about covering up that opening with sheet metal and then puting the heater into place. doing that might keep that exposed side of the heater core covered from that outside, providing more heat to be blown into the cab. am i crazy or has someone else thought about that too? would it even work?

Where is the heater going to pull it's air from then? The Fresh Air Heater was designed to pull the air from outside. If you don't want that, cover the vent and replace your heater with the Recirculating Heater.

Use a 54 heater housing, it has a door that will allow recirculateing air

Murdock,
I've pulled my recirculating heater from my 52' to repaint it. My neighbor has a fresh air on his 49'. I like his. Want to trade? My core drains(blows through) good. Fan works great. I've repainted it a darker forest green. The fan is just primered and I haven't touched the motor...yet.
Let me know what you think. jeff
If you are interested, look at you firewall from the engine compartment on the passenger side. You should see two (2)5/8" or 3/4" holes vertically alighned about 8" apart. Thats where the hoses run through.

It's winter time, why pull your heaters now? Wait until summer or unless you have your truck in non working conditions right now. I have a recirulating heater and it works so well I need to roll the windows down just to cool the cab. Maybe its just all that heat coming through the firewall holes grin
