So I am new to this Car restoration. I have done small things prior to this. Coolers, Coffee Grinders and the like. I love to read everything and the internet can be a scary place.

I plan on Priming now and in spring rough up and do the base and clear in a shops paint booth up the road.

My plan was to prime 2 fenders one day. Splash and radiator panels another day hood another, cab another etc - everything is off the truck.

What is this stuff about paint booths exploding? First I am doing smaller jobs. Second I plan on having plastic sheet walls and ceiling in the garage - no lights inside. a couple fans blowing air into the platic room (cut outs/duct tape in the plastic - fans outside) the outlet has no fan just a filter into a large window.

I feel this will minimize the risk of me being vaporized with the small amount of painting I will be doing.

Am I crazy?

I'd worry more about the air your breathing while your spraying than annihilation in a fiery explosion.
And just how many paint booths are exploding any way?
Anyone have some stats to share?

I have never heard of an exploding booth. I agree with more concern given to the air you are breathing. The fumes are not good for you.

Thanks I have a good charcoal filtered (NEW FILTERS) respirator that I use. I even have one fitted for the dog.

Can't wait to see what this piccaso can do.

The reason you don't hear about exploding paint booths is because of the regulations paint booths have to abide by. Every wonder why the lights are outside the booth? Most folks haven't actually seen the electric motors but they are shielded (or separated from the air stream) so no sparks are around the explosive vapor. Just because you don't hear about them exploding doesn't mean they wont explode.

I've never heard of an exploding paint booth. Can you expand on what you heard?

He's doing painting in an at home garage paint booth. Plenty of reasons for an accidental explosion in a makeshift booth if precautions aren't taken.

SO I got done doing two fenders, two running boards Radiator splash guard and all went well. The fumes from cleaning seem stronger than the painting.

I guess it is normal that you can see the filler outlined under the epoxy primer. Or maybe I did not put enough paint on.

you can see it because the filler absorbs the primer more - it's sealed now so subsequent coats of anything act more like the non-filled areas

Can't see a problem with what you are doing, just make sure your mask is rated for what you are spraying. Furnace, hot water heater - pilot lights all off and a single fan pulling are into the area.
Most of the EXPLOSIONS I have heard about come about when a person is cleaning a spraybooth. A shop down the street ran into a problem when the bonehead took a shopvac in to clean the overspray that had built up on the floor, another thought it would be a good idea to mix the 5 gallon bucket of finish with an electric drill.....BAM! Sparks and open flames are a NO NO.

Also, the chemicals in the paints can be absorbed through your skin also. Take precautions to cover your skin (and ears) when painting.

That's why it's not a good idea to use any electric device with explosive vapors around. Electric motors' brushes cause sparking. That's why in professional booths the electric devices are separated from the vapor stream.
