Does anyone know what vehicles and/or engine sizes I could get a donor (boneyard) HEI from for my 235? Are they a direct fit or are Mods needed? Thanks

The later 250/292 HEI will fit, but there are a few modifications involved. There is a tech tip around here somewhere. Try an archive search.

HEI's were introduced on the 75 model pickup six. There are some earlier threads on how to mod one. Around here, they're getting scarce, last price I saw was $65. For around $80, you can buy a Pertronix to go in your distributor.

Yeah, that'll work. Its turning the oil pump that seems to be the problem.

A dry-sump 235. ROFLMAO.

Bullnose- all kidding aside, I'm in the middle of trouble shooting a very serious and complicated problem with my 235 that has something to do with my use of a modified HEI from a chevy 2.8 liter V-6. Do a search and find my old threads, as you'll find a vast discussion of distributor options, problems & measurements dealing with HEI distributors and hopped-up 235s.

good luck

chip

Thanks for the input guys. I thought the pertronix unit was more expensive. Is the Pertronix easy to install, reliable, or as they say proven? Chip, I read some of your threads. Did you ever figure out the prob with your distributor?

I dropped a dual point kit into mine that I bought on eBay last year for $10. It still uses points but it has much more oomph and the points last much longer because it uses one set to open and one set to close. All I had to do was change the breaker plate and add the new points. The condensor gets moved outside the distributor > I didn't even have to pull it out, it's a 4 screw job.

The Pertronix units are simple easy to install, reliable and easy to revert back to points on the side of the road if needed, just save the old parts. eek They are THE #1 ignition upgrade in the material handling business. One of the downsides is that you don't have the advantage of the fat distributor cap if you are running a high output coil. frown An MSD-6A is a worthwile addition if you have 12 volts, negative ground. cool
