The original one looks to be in good shape, but I have had people tell me I should look at dual cylinder models for safety.
I was planning on re-building the original one, but should I be looking at other options? | | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 | safety is in the driving more than the technology, if you're not planning on a lot of high speed freeway time stock is fine, they got the ol truck thru the last 60 years Bill | | | | | Joined: Jan 2011 Posts: 152 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2011 Posts: 152 | I agree with red48, I went back with stock type. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2012 Posts: 177 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Aug 2012 Posts: 177 | Thanks, sounds like I will go with my original plan. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 Riding in the Passing Lane | | Riding in the Passing Lane Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 | I agree on keeping the original but o-haul it & replace all the steel lines & hoses. Have the emerg. brake working good. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Now I am waiting on is wheel cylinder kits, hoses, etc to show up.
How forgiving are the lines with a double flare? I made about 10 practice flares before the real ones and they look similar to the ones I pulled off the truck. This is my first experience with them so I am not positive what to look for. | | | | | Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,878 . | | . Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,878 | Making a good double flare is crucial. If you're not having any luck you may need a better flare tool kit.
Some tips are: Be sure the tube end is square, use a file to true it up if necessary. Debur the inside of the tube with a little countersink, just enough to make a little bevel about 1/3 the wall thickness. With a small file file a similar bevel on the outside. Use a drop of oil on the end.
