I found a '67 283 for a reasonable price, and with all the issues I seem to be having with my 235, I was considering doing an engine swap. By the pictures it looks like it has the two engine mounting holes on either side of the Harmonic Balancer. So does that mean I can buy the Factory style V8 mounts? I do NOT want to use the aftermarket Tubular style V8 Engine Mount Crossmember. My question is: up to what year did the 283 have the mounting holes for the original-factory style V8 mounts? Also, what year range of Bell Housing will I need for my '59 3100? I can't post pictures right now, but will post some later. I'm sure you can get them through Carters or LMC. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 Riding in the Passing Lane | | Riding in the Passing Lane Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 | All the small block V-8s have the holes for the front mounts. You can buy the kit from most specialty suppliers, although it has goten kind of pricey. You can use most bell houseings for 55-72 v-8 & 63-72 six cyl. The exceptions are the 68 up 4 speeds & some 3 speeds had a larger center hole. 60-62 had the clutch lever on the right hand side. These are rare & in demand. Some had the smaller fly wheel & clutch. I am getting ready to change my 56 over to a v-8.

So I was able to pick up a set of stock V8 mounts locally, but I bought they didn't include the rubber pads. Are the L6 pads and V8 pads the same? The ones on my L6 are brand new. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 | yes the donuts will work on either version [and if you compare the pegs, they can be easily altered to swap too], just make sure you used all the right big washers and cups in the correct position .... also I got some of the donuts from NAPA awhile back [maybe 5 years ago, so might not still be in the system], but they should also be available separately from tri-5 car suppliers like Danchuk

Make sure the flywheel has the correct bolt size. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. So that " 283 " I bought ended up being 350, yes I know I should have run the numbers, I am still new to vintage Chevy's, no excuse though. I have two quick questions: First Just want to double check, since it's a Small Block, I still should be able to use the stock front motor mounts like " WrenchBender Ret " says? Second The " 350 " I bought came with Ram Horn Exhaust Manifolds. I have seen two types, ones that shoot straight down and ones that angle to the back of the engine. I have the ones that angle back ( attached pic ). I'm not concerned with the passenger side of the engine, just the drivers side. Everything in the engine compartment is stock, steering column, E-Brake etc........ Will I have any clearance issues with these. Thanks for your time and patience with an ignorant Chevy Truck lover http://i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff441/AZ59apacheguy/IMG_1678.jpg

As far as the manifolds go, If they fit and your happy with them and they don't come in contact with anything then use them,Be sure to see where your exhaust pipe will go when use the ones you choose. And one more thing to think about is don't use too long of a bolt in the hole that goes through to the fuel pump rod, if you put too long in there it will bind up the fuel pump rod and your fuel pump will not work. http://s1055.photobucket.com/user/baldybenny/library/ 1936 1.5 wrecker,1937 gmc coe,1939 Chevrolet coe,1942 4x4 coe, 1942 coe,1946 dump,1947 2 ton dump, another 1947 2 ton dump,1950 coe,1967 c30,1937 cat 22,1936 Chevrolet 5 window foremans coupe, 1914 ford speedster.

I'm assuming the Bosses you are referring to are the two holes on either side of the timing chain cover right? I checked the front of the block and the " Bosses " you are referring to are drilled. Yes, you are right, I have heard of the " short bolt at the fuel pump " as well. Good to hear about the manifolds, I guess I'll know better about the " fit " when I install the engine. I only brought it up now because a local is selling a pair of coated Ram Horns that shoot straight down instead of back. The angle one wont work on the drivers side. I'm not sure about the pass. side. If you have the straight down ones readily available I would get them. They say money can't buy happiness.
