The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Driveline slight rattle in first gear

Starting out in first gear it sound like something is loose or rattling in the trany area. It is not there in 2or3 gear.I seem to remember that being there when i drove it as a kid.I am starting to get Flashbacks while tinkering with Betsy. Any ideas or just tear it down?

It's a loose dohicky. They come loose all the time.

Is that like going to NAPA to get spark plugs for my Mack truck? I always enjoy a GOOD joke.

Have you checked the trans oil?
First gear commonly gets pitted and noisy.

{took your advice} tranny is full of what i think is axle grease and it dried up.i will have to take the shifter plate off and dig it out. refill would be 90 oil or new grease?

transmissions take trans oil, not grease, what you're seeing is the years of dirt and metal particles built up, and you need to do much more than just 'dig it out', you need to make sure any caked junk in the whole box is flushed out well, especially the bearings

Bill may be right, but some people put grease in transmissions and steering boxes when oil leaks out. You have nothing to loose by just cleaning out the fill hole and adding 90w. It may work fine after that. You may need to fix the leaking, which can include the driveshaft seal, if the rear end becomes over full.

thanks guys i am going to pull it out clean it put new seals gaskets and look at the insides. If it is grease in there that would sound like my dad he did what he wanted not what should have been done. Thanks again.
